I think that every female should travel solo at least once. It can be such a rewarding, liberating and character building experience.  You can do exactly what you want to do and go exactly where you want to go. One of my favorite trips was traveling solo in India. You will become a stronger more independent person as a result. My personal top tips for solo female travel are ….

1 Be prepared

Aside from basic travel preparation (flights, accommodation, transport, vaccines, health insurance) research the culture of the country/countries you are visiting. You should be aware of the cultural norms of the country you’re traveling to and in particular for females.

2 Start small

Perhaps start with a weekend away alone before you embark on something further afield for a longer period.

3 Let someone know where you are

Before you leave you should give someone a copy of your itinerary and check in with them while traveling.  Social media is a great way to check in with people while on your travels. It’s best to schedule a regular check in with someone at home. Register with the Dept of Foreign Affairs.

4 Pack light

You’re more mobile with a smaller bag for both reasons of practicality and safety. You don’t stand out in the way that someone dragging multiple suitcases on their own does.

5 Be aware

Practice common sense. Stay aware of your surroundings and act accordingly. Look like you know where you’re going. Trust your instincts and if something doesn’t feel right get yourself out of there. The best advice is to always play it safe if something doesn’t feel right. Don’t flash cash or electronics. Don’t go out and get drunk on your own, it won’t end well.

6 Dress modestly

Respect the local culture and laws. Do this whether you agree with it or not. Take note of what others are wearing and follow suit. This will avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. Dress like a local as much as possible. Try not to stand out as a total tourist. There is certainly safety in blending in. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with local customs before you leave.

7 Wear a wedding ring

And have a story to go with the ring. In some countries the idea of a lone female traveler is unheard of , you don’t need to tell anyone that you are traveling alone.  Lie a little! Also be careful in some countries in your dealings with men and how open and friendly you are .

8 Aim to arrive during the day.

If at all possible aim to arrive at your destination in daylight. If you’re arriving at night prearrange a driver / taxi/ hotel shuttle to take you to your hotel. You can use Google maps to track your taxi/driver . This way you can see if your taxi / driver is going off route. Take a quick pic of the vehicle’s license plate before you get in . Also while en route you can make a phone call to say ‘I’ll be there in 5..’, that way your driver thinks you’re meeting someone at your destination.

All of the above are sensible and practical tips to use on your solo travels. But don’t forget to embrace the experience and enjoy!
